Can an Under Painting Stand alone as a Finished Artwork?

For the last month I have been working on paintings that are inspired from my trip to Fiji. A few weeks ago I posted a short on You Tube and asked a question about my under painting. I was surprised how many people thought the under painting can be a finished artwork. Take a look at the video, and in the comments below please tell me what you think.

beginning an abstract work

As I begin these I have no idea where they will go. I start very playful with black and white paint to add value and a base layer. Then I like to do some line drawing with crayons and or markers. The next step for me is to think about the theme, so to speak. In this case I wanted more of a landscape. Then I will pick the colors and add 3-5 more layers in a very playful way until I see a composition starting to develop. This next short shows these steps.

At this point I start to define, edit and tweak the work until I am happy with it! Here I am a few weeks later and 1 is done, I call it ‘As Day Turns into Night’.

As I was working on it, it reminded me of an evening in Fiji while having dinner on the deck over looking the coral reefs. It was low tide and a full moon. The locals were out harvesting the shell fish. It was fascinating and fun to watch! One of the staff members told us what was going on and then he showed us pictures of his harvest from the night before! I just love how inspiring travel can be.

We love this place and our Fijian family!
