Matisse meets Rex Ray

My husband calls me his 8 year old. I love to play! Especially in my studio. I also love the stories and artwork of those who have gone before me. Georgia O’Keeffe says her earliest memory is as an infant laying on a quilt and being mesmerized by the colors and patterns!  I enjoy their art and process and I love to teach that and play with their discoveries in my own work.

I have been doing some printmaking and then using those prints as collage papers in paintings. Many of you may be familiar with the cut paper works of Matisse. The stencils I created remind me of some of his cut paper images. Rex Ray was an amazing artist. He used a variety of materials while making his collage works.

So as I was taking the papers I had created and started to cut and arrange the positive and negative shapes together, I was reminded of these two amazing artists. I told my husband I felt like I was combining the work of Matisse with Rex Ray. His response, “you should teach those classes to adults, call it artist meets artist!”

So I created a very short (2 multiple choice questions!) survey to see if this may be a direction to go.

I just love to explore with different materials and marks. The process of play is so free, intuitive and full of discovery. I think I also need to teach a class on the Art of Play. As adults we forget how and WHY we should play! I think the art space is a safe place to do that. Lets get back to being young artists, bust out the crayons, scissors and glue and have some fun!

I think I will print some of these into cards. I love how the bright colors stand out in printmaking. There is too much exploring to do with printmaking! I better get back to it!
